the rise of individualisation allows people to prioritse what is best for them rather than society. this has affected birth rates as people are regularly choosing to have less children or even none as that suits their individual needs
traditionally there would be stigma if women did have children, and there would be pressure to have children. the move from modernity to late modernity has reduced this stigma as people have more individualisation (giddens)
