Experience

Cards (3)

  • The Jew's overall experience was negative. They faced extreme anti-semitism and prejudice. Despite some being rich from their money lending many Jews were extremely poor. The Jews had royal protection from the King and this was something ordinary people hated as well as their religion
  • What happened to Jews in York and Lincoln?
In 1190 Jews were massacred in York
In Lincoln, Jews were accused of ritually torturing and murdering a boy as a result 93 Jews were arrested and 18 hanged
  • Life became increasingly negative as Lomardy bankers came and sort of replaced the Jews. In 1250 King Henry 2nd imposed heavy taxes. In 1275 King Edward 1 imposed the Statue of Jewry which prevented Jews from charging interest of any loans (now they were unable to make a sufficient living off of money lending)
