Impact of Slave Trade on Migration

• During 18th and 19th century thousands of people were enslaved and made to work in British colonies in West Indies and North America, bringing wealth to British merchants
• As many as 3.1 million Africans were transported across the Atlantic in inhumane conditions
• Many Africans worked as servants once in Britain which made their legal status unclear
• Many Africans later fought for British in Americas war for independence, in return they were offered freedom and many came to Britain
