Role of the media:Attitudes to migrants

• Newspapers published Lord Mansfields (a judge), judgement that slavery did not legally exist in England
• Paul Reuter (German migrant) set up a News Agency which sold international news, making Britons feel a part of the wider world
• Liverpool Mail in 1851 - 'The Irish Beggar is generally an idle and worthless wretch and disgusting object'
• Times Newspaper 1856 on Italians - 'We endure them simple as idle people endure dirt and vermin, because we not the moral energy to get rid of them. It's not an evil which threatens to make London unbrearable'
