  • Oxazolidinones bind to the 50S subunit of the ribosome.
  • Linezolid is the main Oxazolidinones.
  • Linezolid can be used parenterally + perorally.
  • Linezolid is effective against gram-positive bacteria but is reserved for bacterial infections that are resistant to other antibiotics, such as MRSA + VRE.
  • Linezolid side effects include
    •  diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and rash.
    • bone marrow suppression
    • thrombocytopenia
    • peripheral neuropathy
    •  optic neuropathy
  • Linezolid is a weak inhibitor of monoamine oxidase, and those taking antidepressants can develop serotonin syndrome which is characterized by
    • flushing,
    • extremely high body temperature,
    • muscle rigidity,
    • tremor that may progress to seizures.
