• Because there were existing communities the Jews found support within them
• Many Jews wanted to stay in the East End but this area was already extremely overcrowded; by 1901 average 14 people in a house
• 2/3 of Jews worked in clothing, shoemaking, and furniture-making
• Many Jews worked in sweatshops for long hours and terrible pay
