  • Antituberculosis medications are agents used to treat tuberculosis, a disease caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
  • Antituberculosis medications act mainly by preventing the production of mycolic acid and the synthesis of this cell wall.
  • TB therapy is done in two phases.
    1. The initial phase consists of daily doses of isoniazidrifampinpyrazinamide, and ethambutol for two months.
    2. only rifampin and isoniazid for four months.
  • For HIV-positive patients, the only change that has to be made is to replace rifampin for rifabutin during the whole therapy.
