All polypeptide (proteins) are made from
amino acids
, so the
sequence
of
bases
in the gene must code for
amino acids.
The
genetic code
is
universal.
When a
polypeptide
is required, the
triplet code
of it's gene is converted into a
molecule
of
messenger RNA
(
mRNA
).
Transcription
is the first stage of
protein synthesis.
Like DNA, mRNA is a
nucleic acid.
Differences between mRNA & DNA:
single stranded
contains
ribosomes
instead of
deoxyribose
contains
uracil
instead of
thymine
In the cytoplasm, the
mRNA
combines with a
ribosome.
Translation
is the
second
stage of
protein synthesis.
Amino acid
is attached to
transfer RNA.
Each has a sequence of
anticodons.
