Transcription & Translation

Cards (9)

  • All polypeptide (proteins) are made from amino acids, so the sequence of bases in the gene must code for amino acids.
  • The genetic code is universal.
  • When a polypeptide is required, the triplet code of it's gene is converted into a molecule of messenger RNA (mRNA).
  • Transcription is the first stage of protein synthesis.
  • Like DNA, mRNA is a nucleic acid.
  • Differences between mRNA & DNA:
    • single stranded
    • contains ribosomes instead of deoxyribose
    • contains uracil instead of thymine
  • In the cytoplasm, the mRNA combines with a ribosome.
  • Translation is the second stage of protein synthesis.
  • Amino acid is attached to transfer RNA. Each has a sequence of anticodons.
