biomolecules

Cards (6)

  • What are the four main biomolecules?
carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids
  • What are polymers?
Polymers: long chains of molecules that are chemically bonded together
    • Made by many monomers
    • It needs to be broken down using enzymes so it becomes smaller polymers
    • Breaks down again to become a monomer
  • What are Polysaccharides?
    Large carbohydrates
    • Many sugar molecules that are chemically bonded to form one chain
    • Complex carbohydrates
  • What are Disaccharides?
    • Molecules in pairs
    • Two single sugar units bonded together to form a disaccharide
  • When starch is broken down by amylase, it becomes Disaccharide, which can possibly be sucrose, lactose, or maltose
  • What enzymes do sucrose, lactose and maltose use?
Lactose - uses lactase as an enzyme
Sucrose - use sucrate enzyme to digest sucrose
Maltose- use maltase enzyme to digest maltose
