  • In 1858 Britain took over India from the East India Company, now apart of the British Empire. This meant thousands migrated to England
  • Thousands of Indians migrated because of;
    -education opportunities (many Indian students studied subjects like law)
    -Indian princes (who'd been forced out by the East India Company) migrated with their riches and never returned
    -East India Company recruited lascars from India, China, Somalia and more and never made the return journey
    -Number of Indian servants migrating with their colonial families increased after 1700 (seen as a status symbol and also cheap)
