what is diffusion
the movement of particles from a high concentration to a low concentration
a higher temperature gives a higher diffusion rate

what is osmosis
the movement of water molecules across a partially permeable membrane from high water concentration to low water concentration

the mass will increase if water has moved into the potato cells
if the mass has decreased the water has moved out of the potato cells
why do root hairs take in minerals using active transport
they can't diffuse so they use active transport which allows the plant to absorb minerals from a very dilute solution in the soil

what is the purpose of active transport in the gut
sometimes there is a lower concentration in the gut than the blood so nutrients cannot diffuse so the body uses active transport this means that glucose can be taken into the blood against the concentration gradient
