  • Edwin and Morcar's rebellion - 1068 - FAIL

    they had run away from William to the north of England, they were joined by northerners who resented William
    William took his forces up north and built castles - Edwin and Morcar surrendered (Edgar Aethling escaped to Scotland)
  • Rebellion in Durham - 1069 -FAIL
    William chose Robert Cumin to be the new earl of Northumbria - on his way to the north, Cumin burnt down Anglo-Saxon houses to show dominance
    When he got to Durham, the Anglo-Saxon people were so angry that they burnt his house down, killing him
  • Rebellion in York - 1069
    Edgar Aethling came from Scotland after hearing about the Durham attack - him and the rebels attacked the York Sheriff and destroyed the castle
    William arrived with a big army and defeated the rebels - he built new castles to replace the old one
    King Sweyn came across from Denmark to help the Anglo-Saxons, the joint army killed over 3000 Normans
    King Sweyn took treasure from York and went home - to stop him from returning William gave him a bunch of money
    William found it hard to catch the rebels (they ran off) so he burnt their houses - Harrying of the North
  • Hereward the Wake - 1070-71
    King Sweyn returned to East Anglia, he made alliances with Anglo-Saxon leaders, Hereward the Wake and Morcar. They attacked Peterborough Abbey and stole the Norman treasure
    William attacked them with a large army and captured Morcar (spent the rest of his life in prison), Hereward was never seen again
