He has failed in splitting his good and bad and has instead allowed evil in hi, to thrive

oxymoron the "trampled" is animalistic and brutal shows that his actions as completely merciless. Also suggests his lack of civillisation as the adverb "calmly" emphasises Hyde's detatchement from his actions
  • "ape like fury"
the simile symbolises the idea of Darwin his theory of evolution which became popular in the victorian society. His fury is descirbed similarly to an ape which suggests hyde is not a fully evolved human being. The evilness that is described that hyde has comes from an ape which then evolves into humans this could be stevenson way of suggesting everyone has an animalistic evil side to them and every human being and innate evil inside of them.
  • " i felt younger lighter happier in body"

rule of 3 and Juxtaposition to show the problems in 19th century society. Jekyll was carrying the pressure to being good and the weight of being good weighed hevily on his shoulders so he tries to do anything to get rid of this weight he was forced to do hyde so he can dp evrythig he wanted but not having jekylls name tarnished. Reflection of the society being far too judgemental. He is also a slave to his desires.
  • Freud
The id part of our brain the controls our raw instincts. When we look at freuds theory of the brain the characters in the text are slaves to their id and desires. Jekyll worships ideas of being free creating Hyde and him gaining power. Hyde worships pure and utter evil.

Making fun of the tradition of the gothic to the addiction of violence women have
  • "O my poor old Harry jekyll, if i ever read satans signature upon a face, it is on that of your new friend" - utterson

The sibilance and religous imagery metaphor makes it almost like satan has stamped hyde like hyde has recieved a seal of approval but its juxraposes with "new friend" from ealry on utterson has been aware someothing is wrong but didnt say anything.
  • "i incline to cains heresy" he used to say quaintly: " I let my brother go to the devil in his own way"

-Cain and abel were the sons of adam and cain murdered abel - foreshadows the text when utterson watches jekyll decline and only gets involved when he has to - recurring them of everyone keeping to themselves an dnot getting involved in anyone elses business
  • all human beings, as we meet them, are commingled out of good and evil: and edward hyde alone in the ranks of mankind, was pure evil
What makes jekyll and hyde so unique is that they were housed in two bodies that was living amongst society. Everyone has two sides to them but if we dont control our duality we will become broken and lost people. Hyde is a slave to evil and jekyll becomes a slave to his evil through Hyde. Human beings are a mixture of both good and bad
  • I sat in the sun on a bench; the animal within me licking the chops of memory: the spiritual side a little drowsed

Metaphor to when an animal sees meat and starts licking its meat with the desire to eat it similarly to hyde to come out, jekyll is dying for hyde to come out. They are reminiscing on the evil acts they have committed whilst feeling free. Religion is being pushed out of the picture and when religion goes evil comes. The power of hyde and weakness of jekyll, as even though they know its bad the text is saying they cannot resist
  • " if i am the chief of sinner, I am the chief of sufferers also"

The quote highlights the themes in 19th century text of going against God and trying to create life via science, so in the pursuits of trying to gain freedom and happiness they suffer tenfold.
  • " with ape-like fury he was trampling his victim under foot and hailing down a storm of blows, under which the bones were audibly shattered"

Ape life fury links to theory of evolution Hyde is stuck on the timeline of evolution. The sound imagery highlights that no human being is capable of it and in creating hyde he has gone back on the line of evolution and not made any advancements.
  • The man trampled calmly of the child's body and left her screaming on the ground
Its not like she was a potential enemy just an innocent girl but the point of letting the id and desires be in charge of your actions. but its juxtaposes to trampling calmly over the body
  • the street shone out in contrast to his dingy neighbourhood like a fire in a forest
The divide between the rich and the poor. The poor stuck up like a sore thumb and highlights the injustices in london and this is where utterson describes to have seen hyde who is a lower level in society
  • I swear to God I will never set eyes on him agian. I bind him my honour to you that i am done with him in this world. It is all at the end. And indeed he does not want help; you do not know him as i do; he is safe, he is quite safe; mark my words, he will never more be heard of

Lack of comtrol jekyll has. Jekyll is a slave to his desires he is a slave to evil. At the start jekyl loses control to himself but by the end he loses it to himself and hyde. The idea comes cricle round that dont mess with God and try to take his role of scretaing new life
  • the perennial war among my members

War connotes violence and battle suggesting internal battle between what society expects and the supressed dual side of man. There is a repeated motif of duality throughout entirety of novella. In victorian society they we highly religous so it could be alluding the the story of cain and able which utterson references in chapter 1. Through biblical illusion he could be saying that the duality is innate and the duplicity of man cannot be suppressed
  • an impression of deformity
as hyde is not a creation of god but a creation of jekyll he is deformed as he cant be in Gods likeness and therfore imperfect. Someone created life outside the realms of God will through the abuse of science
  • Chocolate pall lowered over heaven
The pathetic fallacy. "pall" references the murder and death of carew as palls are placed over a dead bodies face and how heaven has been consumed by an ungodly force. The idea that the death was not at its right time and the order of things has been corrupted aswell
  • Daman and pythias
Greek myth of the willingness to sacrifice themselves for ones friend. In this case the good doctor lanyon has ended up sacrifices himself for his friend in need and pays the price of being a good christian and good doctor against the bad doctor jekyll
  • Amen poole
Juxtaposes to jekylls descent into ego-drifting blasphemy we can see how only utterson remains in the church and can use the holy words amen. Jekyll cannot do. The seperations between God and man is being amplifide i
  • Pale and dwarfish he gave an impression of deformity
Link directly to vivtorian belief of physiognomy that the way someone looks determines their internal nature, and believed that s mark of defromity is a sign of evil so it signignifies that hyde is closely linked to evil
  • a large well made smooth faced man of fifty
Links to the idea of physiognomy but most importantly links to the idea of being well made links to the victorian idea of repression and how victorians were actively encouraged to repress their true nature and instead put on a prestine put together facade. The well made highlights that jekyll had to constract the facade being a mask in oder to be accepted by society
