Love can affect the way you think. People are aware of how it can affect your judgement and cause you to make ignorant decisions. But how ignorant? Could it be a valid reason to become a villain in one’s story? That’s where we will look at the character of Rafayel- a character within a game called ‘Love and Deepspace’  to determine whether it is valid or not.
  • p2
Within the Love and Deepspace universe, the main character briefly meets Rafayel after hearing about his paintings, helping her to catch a little fish called a ‘flammula’- this will be significant later on. Sometime after their encounter, they cross paths once more. As the main character gets to know Rafayel, his personality can be described as care-free, snarky and dramatic. But there is something much deeper to his personality. We are given insight to that after the main character discovers Rafayel is a lemurian. j
  • p3
What is a ‘lemurian’? Coming from Lemuria, lemurians are an ancient civilisation that lived underwater, similar to mermaids when not in human form. Lemurians have the ability to reincarnate with their memories of past lives and to the humans of Love and Deepspace they were just myths and folktales. However, their existence was proven after the discovery of a lemurian ruin. So why is Rafayel being a lemurian relevant? Well, I believe it could be one of Rafayel’s motives if he were to become a villain because it’s linked into the factor of love.
  • p4
The ability to reincarnate would mean that he is stuck with memories of previous lives. Such as his past life of being the God of the Sea in Lemuria. He meets the main character, a human who was tossed overboard into the sea to be sacrificed and wants her to become his devout follower. She is taken to the depths of the sea, to Lemuria, granted deliverance by Rafayel. Rafayel then discusses with his Elder, Elder Admund whether it would be a good idea to make her his follower.
  • p4 pt 2
Becoming his follower would mean that their souls would be bonded and he would not be able to go against her wishes. His Elder makes a point that they barely know each other and that they had just met. The main character is unsure and wants to escape the castle and as Rafayel sleeps- a flammula appears, showing her the way into the city of Lemuria. But eventually Rafayel and the main character fall in love.
  • p5
From the end of the timeline to the start of the current timeline is about 800 years. That would be 292,200 days of Rafayel waiting to see his love again. All those torturous days just to realise she doesn’t remember him. Could you imagine waiting all those years for someone, and when you finally meet the person you love they don’t remember you? Wouldn’t it drive you mad and give you a reason to become a villain? And from the current timeline to the next is 800,000 years.
  • p6 pt 1
I believe the timeline after the current one is where Rafayel could truly have become a villain and will have been justified for it. His home, Lemuria is now vulnerable to the public of humans, to be exploited and used because the sea has dried up. In this world, he is aware the main character is a princess, giving her a flammula as a gift. Throughout all timelines the flammula is significant, fish symbolically represent rebirth and feelings which can link to Rafayel’s story.
  • p6 pt 2
Rebirth could link to the couple as a whole, having to go through trials and tribulations whether she remembers him or not. He finds out through Elder Admund that he has to carve out his love’s heart due to an imbalance in one of the past lives, hinting that the main character once carved out his heart possibly due to a spell casted on her and Rafayel now must be the one to carve out the heart. If successful, Lemuria’s seas will be restored and  if he fails, he will not be able to reincarnate and therefore will die like the rest of Lemuria.
  • p6 pt 3
Despite everything, he chooses to rebel and not follow through although his people are vulnerable and he runs away with the main character. In that sense, to the people of Lemuria he could be viewed as a villain for watching his civilians burn.
  • p7 conclusion
So to conclude, in my humble opinion, Rafayel could have a valid reason to turn to villainy. From having to choose ripping out his love’s heart or the world burning and reincarnating with his memories as if he were chained to them. After all, who wouldn’t go insane having to long for someone for millennia?
