  • Ceramics is the art of making objects of clay and firing them in a klin.
  • Pottery - Pots, dishes, and other articles made of earthenware or baked clay.
  • 3 Divisions of Pottery:
    1. Earthenware
    2. Stoneware
    3. Porcelain
  • Earthenware is a ceramic ware, usually coarse and reddish in color, fired in the lowest temperature ranges.
  • Stoneware is a gray, reddish or buff colored clay body which matures between 1900 to 2300ºF. Called stoneware due to its dense, stone-like character after being fired, this type is impermeable (waterproof) and usually opaque.
  • Porcelain is a ceramic ware fired to the highest temperature ranges and often used for dinnerware, vases, and smaller sculptures.
  • 3 Kinds of Porcelain:
    1. Hard Paste Porcelain
    2. Soft Paste Porcelain
    3. Bone Porcelain (China)
  • Hard Paste Porcelain is made of kaolin or china-clay, a white substance which is a product of decomposition of the feldspar contained in granitic rocks.
Feldspar is associated with quartz and mica.
  • Soft Paste Porcelain is sometimes called artificial porcelain because some materials entering into its composition were substitutes for the materials used in the making of Oriental porcelain.
  • Soft Paste Porcelain is known for softer whiteness of its body, sometimes distinctly creamy in tone, and by its usually greater translucence.
  • Bone Porcelain hold a middle ground between hard paste and soft paste porcelain.
  • Studio Pottery is produced by individual craftsmen and proves diverse. Production potters make large quantities of ceramic wares like plates, platters, dishes, bowls, etc., throwing the same form of clay for all products. However, these potters also create unique, one-of-a-kind pieces.
  • Commercial Pottery simply refers to ceramics produced in factories. This is most common for mass-produced flatware, bowls, mugs and cups
