Enemy Aliens

• Thousands of Germans were living in Britain in WW1.

  In August 1914 Parliament passed a British Nationality and Status of Aliens Act which declared Germans "enemy aliens". This Act forced Germans to provide evidence of good character and knowledge of English. Those who could do this were interned on Isle of Man for duration of the war and those who couldn't (29,000) were deported
