  • hitler became the voice of the german workers' party:
    • jan 1919: hitler joined the party, was still in the german army
    • became known as a passionate and skilled speaker, crowds gathered to hear him talk
    • german workers' party began to rely on him to get new party members
    • 1920 hitler became the chief of propaganda (in 1919 there were 60 members and by the end of 1920 there was 2000)
    • in 1920 the party re-branded as the nazi party
    • july 1921: hitler became the leader
  • The nazi party:
    • was a nationalist party
    • thought that the interests of germans should be centre of government policy
    • was antisemitic (anti-jewish) and was opposed of the weimar republic.
    • wanted to restore germany greatness
  • nazi party develop new identity:
    • as party grew in popularity established an identity that appealed to as many people as possible.
    • feb 1920: nazi party promotes its policies in the 'twenty-five point programme'
    • programme stressed the superiority of the german people and promotes antisemitism.
    • party wanted to raise pensions and improve health and education- only for germans
    • rejected treaty of versailles promoting german greatness gave the party a nationwide appeal
    • 1921: hitler founded own militia called the SA, carried out violent antisemitic attacks and intimidated rival political groups.
