1923-26: munich putsch

  • 1922: a nationalist party overthrew the italian government, inspiring hitler to do the same in germany.
  • why hitler thought it was right time for a putsch:
    • weimar republic seemed weak
    • hyperinflation was at its peak , were food riots
    • germans were angry at the french and belgian invasion of the ruhr when the government stopped resistance by ending the strike there in 1923- discontent stopped
  • nov 1923- nazi marched into munich:
    • hitler soldiers occupied a beer hall in bavarian city of munich where local government leader were having meeting.-announced that the revolution has begun.
    • next day hitler marched into munich supported by his sa
    • news of the revolt had been leaked to the police and they were waiting for him
    • police fired on the rebels and the revolts quickly collapsed
  • after of the fail:
    • hitler was imprisoned for his role in this munich putsch but his trial gave him valuable publicity.
    • wrote of a book in prison called mein kampf describing his beliefs and ambitions.
    • mein kampf was a vital spreading nazi ideology - introduced hitler's belief that the aryan race was superior to all other races and that all germans had the right to 'lebensraum' (more space to live).
  • after the munich putsch hitler changed tactics:
    • mid 1920s: german economy was starting to recover under stresemann- general support for the nazis declined and overturning the government through a coup no longer was realistic.
    • nazi party was banned after the putsch along with the sa.
    • dec 1924: hitler released from jail
    • feb 1925: ban on the nazi party was lifted
    • hitler re-established the nazi party with himself as supreme leader
    • changed tactics: now tried to gain control through the democratic system- involves restructuring the nazi party to be more successful in national elections.
  • 1926:
    • held a conference in bamberg- worried that the party has become divided, some wanted to go in socialist direction but made it clear that they would only follow his agenda.
