Cards (18)

  • 6 things about the structure of solid
Vibrate, Tightly packed, Regular, Fixed, No flow, No compression
  • 3 things about the structure of a liquid
Spread out, Slide pass, lightly compressible
  • 4 things about the structure of gas
Freely moves, Fills container, Compressible, Lots of energy
  • whats the relative mass of neutron and proton
    1
  • What's the relative mass of an electron?
    0.0005
  • how do you work out the atomic mass number
    neutrons + protons
  • how do you work out the atomic number
    number of protons
  • how do you work out the relative atomic mass
total mass of all atoms/total number of atoms
  • whats the maximum amount of electrons in shell 1,2 and 3
    2,8,8
  • whats an isotope
Isotopes are 2 or more forms of the same element that contain equal numbers of protons but different numbers of neutrons, there mass number differs.
  • whats an ion?
An ion is when an atoms numbers of electrons and protons are not equal. An ion is a atom with positive or negative charge.Positive= ions/cationNegative= anions
  • who was the first person in the history of the atom
Democritus 500 BC- atomic theory- everything is made up of tiny particles separated by empty space.
  • who was the second person that came up with the history of the atom
John Dalton- 1800s -Dalton described atoms as solid spheres making each different element (e.g. fire, water, air, earth) however nobody believed him due to him having no evidence.
  • who was the third person that came up with the history of the atom
JJ Thomson- 1897- Thomson came up with the Plum Pudding Model. His experiment showed that atoms couldn't have been solid spheres and instead contained negatively charged particles. Simplified he described it as positive charged cake mix embedded with negative plums.
  • who was the fourth person that came up with the history of the atom
Ernest Rutherford- 1909- Rutherford's experiment was to take positive alpha particles and fire them at a thin sheet if gold. Most particles went straight through the sheet as Thomson had discovered however some deflected and a few rebounded of the sheet. His theory was the nucleus was positive and there was a negative cloud that was around the nucleus explaining his results
  • who was the fith person that came up with the history of the atom
Niels Bohr- 1913- Bohr suggested that electrons orbit the nucleus in the similar way the planet orbits the sun and they were held together by shells.
  • who was the sixth person that came up with the history of the atom
    Rutherford- Later Rutherford discovered protons
  • who was the seventh person that came up with the history of the atom
James Chadwick- Chadwick discovered the neutral neutron
