  • Citu - site
    • Timber housing, on site factory = reducing carbon footprint
    • Climate Innovation District (central Leeds) 950 houses
    • All built on Brownfield sites
    • Built shops, bars and sports facilities for people
    • SUDs - excess water infiltrates into the ground
    • Multigenerational building - Primary school, care home and apartments (however no parking)
    • The establishment has steep stairs which are bad for accessibility
    The houses are built higher to prevent flooding as they are built close to the canal (but it may still not be high enough / not tested)
  • Citu - Energy reducing features
    • Home and Away Switch - lets people turn off all lights remotely from their phone
    • Low energy homes - include high levels of insulation and low levels of air tightness and thermal modelling 
    • Air source heat pump - transfers heat from outside air to water which heats the water in the hot water cylinder. This raises the temperature of the heat pump meaning then less fossil fuels need to be used to heat it. 
  • Citu - Terrace Houses
    • Some of the houses have roof terraces and have the kitchen upstairs (upside down living) - this makes the most of the space
    • £25,000 for a car space on top of mortgage
    • Only allowed a car if you own a 3 bedroom house or more
    • There are no car parking spaces outside homes and cars are parked in a hidden underground car park
    • Starting piece of a 3 bedroom house is £485,000
  • Citu - Apartments
    • 88 apartments with windows on both sides to let light in 
    • Apartments - some have no balconies and have an industrial style with a metal roof and showing pipes which may make them look unattractive 
    • £185,000 for a 1 bedroom apartment
  • Brewery Wharf 
    • Used to be the site of a brewery and goods were transported to and from the brewery on the river 
    • It employed 700 workers and shut in 2011
    • After this they opened an Art Gallery but since this has shut
    • There are now hotels, offices and shops 
    • There used to be no corner shops but now there is a Sainsburys local 
    • After 10 years they now have a school and doctors 
  • Leeds Dock
    • Royal Armories -> flagship (brings visitors) 1996 4.5million to build 
    • Southbank apartments were not filled 
    • Allied London which are a company which are ‘making great places’ were employed by Leeds City Council to rebrand the Southbank 
    • The renamed ‘Clarence Dock’ ‘Leeds Dock’ and have built sculptures, planted plants, created seating and are now trying to make the water clean for swimming 
  • Dock Street - Victoria Quays
    • Gentrification - wealthy have moved into the area and it has created a fortress landscape
  • Granary Wharf
    • Regenerated buildings - have kept the original stone and windows
    • Original features - used to bring in coal have been kept
    • Bridgewater Place built in 2009:
    • Was the tallest building in Leeds
    • Full of offices and apartments 
    • However, created the venturi effect which affected wind channeling down buildings creating strong wind 
    • This blew over a truck in 2011 and this killed a woman
    • Since they have built large metal sails along the road to disrupt the wind making the channeling weaker
  • ASDA Headquarters
    • 1987 - first business development in Leeds
    • Used to be a high crime area but this has since reduced 
    • Pedestrian Bridges have been built 
  • Bridge End
    • Run down - abandoned shops 
    • Derelict buildings 
    • Plants are growing out of buildings and it has been left untouched
