• Thermal energy is energy of an object due to the kinetic energy of the atoms

• Potential Energy: Gravitational, Elastic, Chemical, and Radiant/light
• Kinetic Energy: sound, thermal/heat,electrical,mechanical, and nuclear
• Potential energy is based on shape or position
• Kinetic energy is based on speed or mass
• ALL transformations have heat energy
• Energy can only be transferred or transformed
• Transfer: To move
• Transform: change
• Conductor: a material that allows for heat and energy to flow

  EX: metal
• Insulator: a material that does not allow for heat and energy to flow

  EX: wood,plastic, and rubber
• Conduction is when heat is transferred through direct contact
• Convection is the transfer of heat through a gas or liquid, Hot air rises and cold air sinks
• Radiation is the transfer of heat without any contact between objects
• specific heat is how well substances hold onto the heat they gain
