Science-8 (Earthquake, magnitude, intensity)

Cards (10)

  • The Richter scale is used to measure the strength or size of an earthquake.
  • Richter Scale measures the amplitude of seismic waves generated by an earthquake.
  • When an Earthquake happens, the main quantity of interest is its magnitude.
  • There are two ways on how to describe the strength of an Earthquake: intensity and magnitude.
  • The magnitude describes the energy released as the rocks bend and suddenly snap along the faults.
  • The greater the magnitude, the stronger the Earthquake is.
  • The Richter Magnitude Scale which is expressed in Hindu- Arabic numerals ( eg. 2, 3, 4) are numerical values to describe the energy released.
  • Intensity describes the observing effects of an Earthquake to people, objects, environment and structure in a certain locality.
  • Roman numerals ( eg. I, II, III) are used to expressed the intensity scale.
  • The PHIVOLCS Earthquake Intensity Scale (PEIS) is used in the Philippines.
