  • What is locus of control?

    The belief about the extent to which individuals have control over their own lives.
  • Internal locus of control is the perspective that a person can control their life.
  • External locus of control is the perspective that people don't have control over their decisions and that it is all down to fate.
  • People with an internal LOC are more resistant to persuasion than those with an external LOC
  • People with an internal LoC conform less to a majority and are more confident in their judgements .
  • People with an extreme external LoC are unable to control a situation, causing exhaustion, stress and symptoms of depression.
  • Educational programmes for children to encourage internal LoC can reduce problems associated with poor health later in life.
