Sequence of base triplet in DNA or mRNA which code for a specific amino acid
nature of the genetic code and what it means
non-overlapping
Degenerate
Universal
What does non overlapping mean
Each base is only red once and the adjacent triplets don’t overlap
What does degenerate mean?
Multiple/7 triplets/codons can code for the same amino acid, this limits the effect of mutations
What does universal mean?
The same triplet codes for the same amino acid in all organisms, this makes genetic engineering possible E.G.insulin for diabetics extracted from cows/pigs pancreas
What is a gene
a sequence of DNA nucleotides that codes for a specific protein/polypeptide. It is located on a chromosome and consists of a sequence of codons that are transcribed into mRNA, which is then translated into a polypeptide chain (protein).
