  • conformity - a change in a person’s behaviour or opinions as a result of real or imagined pressure from a person or group of people
  • compliance:
    • shallowest level of conformity
    • here a person changes their public behaviour the way they act, but not their private beliefs
  • internalisation:
    • internalisation is the deepest and most permanent level of conformity
    • here a person changes their public behaviour and their private beliefs
    • change occurs publicly and privately, whether the group is there or not
  • identification:
    • a moderate level of conformity
    • conform to the behaviours and opinions of a group because there is something about the group we value
    • we identify with the group and want to be recognised as being apart of it. This is in order to gain approval
  • normative social influence:
    • acceptance / avoid rejection
    • emotional
    • compliance / identification
    • strangers and close friends
  • informational social influence:
    • information / being right
    • cognitive
    • new belief system / believe that their new beliefs are tight
    • internalisation
    • experts / difficult / ambivalent
  • normative social influence is where a person conforms in order to be accepted and belong to a group
  • informational social influence is where a person conforms to gain knowledge or because they believe that someone else is right
