antibiotic resistance

Cards (7)

  • ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE:
    bacteria enters the body.
    person takes antibiotics.
    random mutations occur.
bacteria becomes less affected by the antibiotic.
the surviving bacteria not killed by the antibiotic form a new colony called an antibiotic resistant strain.
    The bacteria infect other people.
the other person takes a different antibiotic.
sometimes the bacteria could develop resistance to this too.
This resistant bacteria is called a superbug.
  • MRSA is a common superbug that can spread in hospitals easily. It is resistant to most antibiotics. Because of this, it can be fatal.
  • antibiotic resistance is very rare
  • because there are many types of antibiotics, resistance is sure to arise
  • antibiotics are sometimes given unnecessarily to humans who have a mild bacterial infection or a viral infection. Antibiotics are not effective against viruses.
  • antibiotics are commonly given to animals to help them grow faster or not get ill, however this can lead to more antibiotic resistance
  • to prevent antibiotic resistance, we need to limit the use of antibiotics
