Cards (6)

  • what did Bahrick et al(1975) research
    duration of LTM
  • Bahrick et al's procedure
studied 392 American participants aged 17-74
    tested recall in 2 ways:
    1.photo recognition of 50 photos
2.free recall of names in their graduating class
  • findings of Bahrick
tested within 15 years of graduation= 90% accuracy in photo recognition
after 48 years= recall of 70% in photo recognition
after 15 years= 60% accuracy in free recall
after 48 years= 30% accuracy in free recall
  • conclusion of Bahrick's findings
shows that LTM may last up to a lifetime for some material
  • strengths of Bahrick
high external/ecological validity( investigated meaningful memories) - suggests it is a real estimate duration of ltm
    reliable findings ( research support)
  • limitations of Bahrick
lacks representativeness- only American and only up to age 74
poor control (e.g. how many people they were still in contact with from high school)
