  • hydraulic action - water compresses air into river ban causing material to be dislodged
  • abrasion - water force throws bedload against banks causing erosion
  • solution - soluble rocks react with acid in the water
  • attrition - load thrown against other particles in the water causing it to become smaller and rounder
• 1. differential erosion occurs, over bands of more and less resistant rock
  2. undercutting creates an overhang of hard rock which is left unsupported and collapses into plunge pool due to gravity, further eroding the plunge pool
  3. waterfall retreats to form a gorge
