  • The early 80’s was a time of racial tension in Britain with race riots, high unemployment high accusations of racism and discrimination by the police. They felt that their community was often represented negatively and often represented as racial stereotypes in the mainstream British press. News was very rarely reported from a black perspective.
  • The first editor, Flip Fraser, led a team of young journalists in the 1980's who set about addressing the issues that mattered to Britain's Afro-Caribbean community.
    The Voice is a commercial media product but could also be seen as fulfilling a public service through its targeting of a niche ethnic minority audience.
