transpiration

• Transpiration steam - water flows up plant and leaves via evaporation
• Steam pathway: roots - xylem - leaf - stomata
• high temp/light effect - more stomata open to let co2 in so water releases
• dry air- increases concentration gradient , lose more water
• Preventing transpiration:

  1. close stomata - blocks exit for water loss
  2. waxy cuticle - impermeable surface
  3. wilting - reduce surface area to lose water from
  4. curl leaves - reduce water gradient and surface area
• Stomata - water out, closed
• Stomata - water in, open
• Stomata (pores)

  1. water enters guard cells via osmosis
  2. guard cells swell up
  3. Thicker inside cell wall causes uneven swelling
• Transpiration is the evaporation and movement of water away from the plant's leaves from the inside of the plant.
