Energy in SHM

Cards (6)

  • In SHM, when there are no resistive forces, the total energy of the system remains constant.
  • The energy of the object will vary between kinetic energy and potential energy but the sum of these energies at any point is constant.
  • To calculate the total energy of the oscillating system, the maximum kinetic energy or the maximum potential energy can be calculated as when one of these energies is at its maximum, the other is zero.
  • An oscillating object will have its maximum kinetic energy at its equilibrium position, when its potential energy is zero.
  • The total energy at any point can be calculated using both equations and adding the values.
  • As the total energy remains constant, the maximum kinetic energy will be equal to the maximum potential energy.
