formation of hurricanes

Cards (9)

  • hurricanes use warm moist air as fuel
  • the warm moist air over the ocean rises upwards, causing an area of low pressure below.
  • air from the surrounding area pushes into the low pressure area, then the 'new' air becomes warm and moist before rising and the cycle then repeats.
  • as the warm air continues to rise it cools down and the water in the air forms clouds.
  • the whole system of clouds and wind spins and grows, while being fed by the oceans heat and water evaporating.
  • storms on the north of the equator spin anti-clockwise and storms on the south of the equator spin clockwise because of the earths rotation on its axis
  • as the storm system rotates faster and faster an eye forms in the centre. in the centre of the eye it is calm with very low pressure,
  • when winds in the rotating storm reach 74mph the storm is classed as a hurricane
  • hurricanes weaken when they hit land because they are no longer being 'fed'.
