  • Mouth: digestion begins in the mouth where food is mechanically digested by chewing or mostication
  • Esophagus: a muscular tube about 25 centimeters long.
  • The chewed food is now called bolus passes through the pharynx and then to the esophagus.
  • Pharynx: a short muscular tube that serves as passageway of food and air.
  • Stomach: a bag like or pear shaped organ that can temporarily expand to store food.
  • Small intestine: is a long coiled tube most of the digestion takes place in the small intestine.
  • Large Intestine: Undigested food goes to the large Intestine and is temporarily stored there.
  • Rectum and anus: the rectum provides a temporarily storage for the feces or bowel before they are excreted.
