atmospheric pollutants

Cards (3)

  • pollutants from fuels - sulfur dioxide
    • sulfur dioxide = combustion of a fossil fuel with sulfur impurities
    • acid rain is caused by sulfur trioxide. it harms and kills plants and animals, especially aquatic ones. it can also damage man-made structures such as buildings/statues
  • pollutants - carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide
    • carbon dioxide - complete combustion of any fuel containing carbon atoms
    • carbon monoxide - incomplete combustion of any fuel containing carbon atoms
    • nitrogen oxides - oxidation of atmospheric nitrogen inside the engine of a car causing smog, acid rain. smog can cause asthma attacks or death
  • properties of pollutants
    • carbon monoxide is a toxic gas is colourless and odourless and os is not easily detected.
    • sulfur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen cause respiratory problems in humans and cause acid rain
    • particulates cause global dimming and health problems fro humans
