  • The African National Congress was set up in 1912 to campaign for the rights of black South Africans.
  • The ANC intended to be peaceful and to cut across all tribal divisions.
  • In 1943, the ANC had set up a Youth League, which adopted a more aggressive programme of action.
  • In 1949, Walter Sisulu of the Youth League became Secretary General of the ANC and Oliver Tambo and Nelson Mandela joined the Executive youth council.
  • The ANC took up the ANCYL's Programme of Action, which included strikes, demonstrations and boycotts.
