family therapy

Cards (3)

  • Family therapy has been shown to reduce relapse rates in individuals with schizophrenia by improving family dynamics and reducing levels of expressed emotion (EE), a known trigger for relapse. Studies (e.g. Pharaoh et al.) have found that family therapy can enhance communication and problem-solving within families, creating a more supportive home environment. This makes it a valuable long-term intervention.
  • While family therapy helps manage the social and emotional environment, it does not directly treat the symptoms of schizophrenia. It is most effective when used alongside antipsychotic medication. On its own, it cannot reduce hallucinations or delusions, and therefore may not be suitable as a primary treatment.
  • Not all families are willing or able to engage in therapy. Some may be too dysfunctional, disinterested, or unavailable. Additionally, the success of the therapy depends on the quality of the therapist and the family’s commitment, meaning it may not be a viable option for everyone.
