TMO5. Deciduous and pulp

Cards (5)

  • Primary molars give way to premolars instead of molars.
Primary teeth are more white with thinner enamel, more pronounced cervical margin so bulbous crowns, and shorter thinner roots that are more divergent. Larger pulp chambers, prominent horns.
  • Maxillary primary teeth:
Central incisors - smaller, equidistant width and length. Rounder, fuller, shovel-shaped. Large palatal cingulum
Lateral incisors - less pronounced cingulum, cervical margin most curved on mesial side
Canines- Mesial slope longer than distal, diamond shaped incisal edge
First Molar - Bulge on mesial buccal surface - tubercle of Zuckerkandl. Trapezoid coronal outline, palatal surface less wide than buccal. Mesiopalatal cusp largest, pointed. 3 roots
Second molar- More prominent bulge on cervical buccal surface, cusp of carabelli present.
  • Mandibular anterior primary teeth:
Central incisors- Cervical margin most curved on mesial side, labial bulge at cemento-enamel junction. Chisel shaped
Lateral incisors- Round disto-incisal, sharp mesio-incisal. Incisal edges slope downwards, crown may twist on root. Larger, more concave labially and longer roots than central
Canine- Mesial slope shorter than distal, smaller and slimmer than maxillary. Cervical margin more curved mesially, labial and lingual ridges less defined. Root inclines distally and labially
  • Mandibular posterior primary teeth:
First molar- Tubercle of Zuckerkandl over buccal cervical curve. Buccal cusps compressed lingually, conical defined lingual cusps. Mesiobuccal cusp largest, flat tooth, mesial marginal ridge more pronounced than distal. Flat roots, mesial longer and grooved, appears rectangular
Second molar- Cervical bulge on buccal surface, buccal surface inclined lingually. Rectangular occlusal outline, buccal cusps equal in size. Mesial root longer and flattened
  • Primary pulp canals:
    • incisor - single, oval cross section, many accessory canals
    • canine - single, oval cross section
    • molars (same as cusps) - Mx 3 roots, 4 canals and Md 2 roots, 4 canals
