Backups

Cards (16)

  • A backup is the standard operating procedure when working with valuable data.
  • Archive bit: A bit on the file that shows if a file has been modified or not.
  • Backup testing: Test backup data by recovering it monthly.
  • Backup data off-site and on-site.
  • 3-2-1 backup rule: 3 copies of data: on 2 different media with 1 copy being off-site for disaster recovery.
  • Grandfather-father-son (GFS): Monthly backup, weekly backup, and daily backup.
  • Full: All files on the machine are backup.
  • Incremental: Only files that has changed since the backup of any type, clears the archive bit after backup.
  • Differential backup: Only files that have changed since the last full backup.
  • Synthetic backup: Stores a full backup and an incremental or differential backup to make a full backup.
  • Full backup: The starting point of differential and incremental backup.
  • Incremental backup: Data recovery time is longer than with differential backup because multiple backup copies must be restored.
  • Differential backup: Only the last full backup and last differential are needed to restore data.
  • Incremental backup: Most space efficient between the three backup methods.
  • Off-site backup advantages: Geo redundancy, scalability, and improved security.
  • On-site backup advantage: Faster data access and no ongoing subscription fees.
