  • FDR passed Executive Order 8587 in 1940 which prohibited racial discrimination. It was used in 1941 to prevent discrimination in the defence industries. However the primary objective was not to increase equality - Roosevelt had to supply labour and was pressured by Randolph’s threat of a march on Washington.
  • Truman signed an Executive Order in 1948 against segregation in the military.
  • Truman signed an Executive Order in July 1948 which ended segregation in the army.
  • Eisenhower sent federal troops to support the integration of schools in Little Rock.
