  • staccato . above or below the note is to be played short and detached
  • A legato mark over a phrase means the phrase is played smoothly
  • Tenuto - above or below the note means to hold the note for its full value and to put weight on it
  • Accent > above the note means put emphasis on that note
  • Marcato ^ above the note means a sharp and short accent
  • A slur above or below a group of notes means play with no breaks in between, one breath for wind players not tonguing, and one bow for strings
  • // through the stem of the note means double tonguing for wind/brass instruments

  • Sfz is a sforzando, strong emphasis and a sudden accent
