> Puritan MP Peter Wentworth challenged Elizabeth’s ban on religious bills. He raised the issues of freedom of speech, religion and succession.
Powerful Puritans:
> Elizabeth closed Parliament and banned the Commons from bringing in bills to do with religion. When this was ignored, Elizabeth closed Parliament again and arrested Peter Wentworth. He died in the Tower of London in 1597.
Puritan Propaganda:
> In 1583, a Puritan named John Stubbs published a pamphlet criticizing Elizabeth’s marriage negotiations with Francis of Anjou.
Puritan Propaganda:
> Elizabeth had Stubbs arrested. He was found guilty and had his right hand cut off.
Prophesying:
> Archbishop Edmund Grindal refused to end prophesying. This was a big challenge to Elizabeth, as Grindal was the Archbishop of Canterbury (the most powerful churchman in England).
Prophesying:
> Elizabeth had Grindal placed under house arrest for seven years. As soon as he died, she replaced him with John Whitgift. Whitgift immediately ended prophesying. 300 ministers were suspended for failing to follow the Three Articles.
