  • socialisation is the process by which individuals acquire the norms, values, beliefs, attitudes, roles, behaviours, language, culture, and expectations necessary to function as members of society.
  • beliefs are ideas that members of society hold to be true
  • values are general guidelines about how members of society should behave, that generally shape behavioral norms
  • A value system is a collection of values, norms, traditions and customs that are agreed upon and shared by a specific society
  • "high culture" is the culture of the upper class, which is often associated with the arts and intellectual pursuits
  • mass/popular culture is the culture that is enjoyed by the majority of the population and is mass-produced for mass consumption.
    eg. pop music, hollywood films, etc
  • norms are rules that govern what behavior is considered normal in different social situations
  • roles are the behavior expected from those who occupy a particular status
