How does sticky mucus increase risk of lung infection?

Cards (1)

  • Mucus is sticky, so cilia can't move it. Mucus production continues and a thick layer of Mucus builds up on the lining of the airways of the lungs. There is are low levels of oxygen in the Mucus because of the slow Diffusion of oxygen and because in those with CF, epithelial cells use up more oxygen. This creates anaerobic conditions where bacteria thrives.
