  • plasma is the liquid part of the blood in the plasma you will find red blood cells and white blood cells and also tiny fragments of blood called platelets
  • blood plasma transports: 1. soluble digestion products such as glucose from the small intestine to other organs 2. plasma transports carbon dioxide produced by aerobic respiration from the organs to the lungs to be breathed out. 3. plasma transports the waste product urea from the liver to the kidneys to be exreted in the urine
  • red blood cells transport oxygen from the lungs to the body cells
  • adaptations for the red blood cells is that it contains haemoglobin 2. red blood cells have no nucleus which means they have more room for haemoglobin 3. they have a bioconcave disc shape this gives the red blood cells a greater surface area so that oxygen diffuses in and out rapidly
  • white bloodcells form part of the immune system eg. making antibodies it contains a nucleus which has dna this encodes the instructions that white blood cells need to do their job
  • platelets are tiny fragments of cells their job is to make blood clot
  • donated blood uses; can be used to replace blood lost during an injury 2. some people are giving platelets extracted from blood to help in clotting 3. protein extracted from blood can be used useful
  • disadvantages of donated blood can be; the donated blood has to be the same as the patients blood otherwise patients immune system can reject it and patient could die 2. risk of infection lots of diseases are transmitted through blood
