In Victorian times, a corsage meant a 'bodice' and women would often place flowers or ornaments at the top of their bodice to ward off evil spirits.
Along with the strong gold pin and clasp, a heavily corseted bodice should support the weight of the brooch, but even so, it would be impractical as the scale is so big it would restrict movement and be awkward to wear.
The large amount of 18ct gold used would also make the piece heavy and uncomfortable.
