Cards (5)

  • equipment
    • oscilloscope
    • large circular coil
    • stands
    • 50Hz AC supply
    • protractor card
    • search coil
  • method
    • mount circular coil vertically with stanf and position search coil at centre of circular coil
    • search coil should be parallel to circular coil
    • connect circular coil to AC supply and search coil to oscilloscope
    • protractor card placed underneath two coils
    • turn on the AC supply
    • select suitable voltage sensitivity and time base settings and record peak to peak value of induced AC voltage
    • tilt search coil so angle between two coils increases by 10 degrees repeat increasing by 10 degrees up to 90 degrees
    • repeat experiment twice more and record mean value of induced emf for each angle
  • graphs and calculations
    • find cos(θ)\cos\left(\theta\right) for each angle and tabulate
    • plot graph of induced emf against cos(θ)\cos\left(\theta\right)
    • straight line through origin
    • induced emf proportional to cosine of the angle
    • ϵ=\epsilon=BANωcos(θ)BAN\omega\cos\left(\theta\right)
  • safety
    • no notable risks
  • improvements
    • read angle off protractor from far above to reduce parallax error or use set square
