  • Why did the Kaiser go to Tangier?
    To show German interest in North Africa, he was worried about the French mandate in Morocco and how France was expanding power over North Africa. He showed support for Sultan Aziz and Moroccan Independence.

  • What was the Algeciras Conference?
    A conference held between 12 European countries and the USA in 1906 to resolve the First Moroccan Crisis and determine the influence of European powers in Morocco. The final agreement was that France would have controlling interest in Moroccan affairs, but everyone could trade with them. Any action taken in Morocco had to be agreed by all the countries.
  • When was the Second Moroccan Crisis and what caused it?
    1911-12, France and Spain sent soldiers to Fez to help the Sultan who was facing an uprising of the rebel tribes, doing it to 'protect their people who were living in Fez'
  • What was the German reaction to the French action in the SMC?
    They thought the troops were sent to occupy Morocco, going against the Algeciras agreement. They sent SMS Panther to Agadir in July 1911, to 'protect interests of German people in Morocco'. Britain supported France, they were scared Germany would build a Mediterranean naval base, which would threaten the British one in Gibraltar.
  • What were the short term outcomes of the crisis?
    Germany ended involvement in Morocco due to a financial crisis, they allowed France to control Morocco in return for land in the Congo. Treaty of Fez was signed in November 1911.
  • What were the long term effects of the crisis?
    British support of France strengthened the Entente, the division between the Entente and Germany deepened.
