Systematic Sampling

• Systematic sampling - when members of the population are selected in a regular pattern. Starting from a randomly selected point using a RNG.
• Advantage of systematic sampling:

  • easy to do with / without a list
• Disadvantage of systematic sampling:

  • can be biased depending on the list
• Systematic sampling sample frame:

  • obtain a list of elements and number
  • interval = population size / sample size
  • randomly select starting point between 1 and interval
  • select every 'interval'th element from the starting point
