In ‘Mein Kampf’, Hitler argued that the German people needed ‘living space’ (lebensraum).
They would gain this space by taking control of land to the east of Germany, as well as looking elsewhere.
Hitler announced that Germany would stop paying reparations.
He then remilitarised the Rhineland which had been demilitarised after WWI.
The Nazis ‘invaded’ Austria in 1938 before 99.75% of Austrians voted to unite Austria and Germany (Anschluss).
ANALYSIS (FOR)
Rebuilding Germany’s military created jobs across Germany.
Men were needed to build the weapons of war, including an air force.
Other men found work in Hitler’s enlarged army.
ANALYSIS (AGAINST)
Many Germans worried about the possibility of war.
They believed that Britain or France might declare war, and feared the effects of war, including possible punishments for Germany.
EVALUATION
Reversing the TOV was hugely popular in Germany. France or Britain did not stop him. Many Germans believed Hitler was restoring dignity and power, as well as uniting the German people.
