  • Declarative: Makes a statement and ends with a full stop.
  • Imperative: A command or polite request. It ends with an exclamation mark or a full stop.
  • interrogative: asks a question and ends with a question mark.
  • Exclamatory: Expresses excitement or emotion. It ends with an exclamation mark.
  • Independent clause: A clause that can stand alone as a sentence. Remember that a sentence has a subject and verb.
  • dependant/subordinate clause: Is a clause that cannot stand alone as a complete sentence.
  • Simple sentence: Has just one independent clause.
  • Compound: Has at least two independent clauses.
  • Complex: Has an independent clause and at least one dependent/subordinate clause.
  • Appositive phrase: A noun or a noun phrase that sits next to another noun to rename it or to describe it in another way.
